Interview Do's & Don'ts

Do’s:

1. Do arrive on time. Prior to the interview take a practice run to the location, or be sure that you know where it is and how long it will take you to get there. Plan to arrive a few minutes early. Being late to an interview is NEVER excusable.

2. Do go in prepared. Do your research on the company, their products and if possible the person you are interviewing with. Also, prepare answers to possible questions and practice before the interview.

3. Do project the right image. Dress appropriately for the company, job and industry. If you are unsure of the dress code err on the side of conservatism.

4. Do greet the receptionist or assistant with respect and courtesy.

5. Do bring extra resumes and list of references to the interview. Also, if asked to fill out an application, do it neatly, completely and accurately. Don’t write “See Resume” and turn it in.

6. Do shake hands firmly and make eye contact with the interviewer.

7. Do have and show enthusiasm for the company and the position. Be engaging but don’t be overly   aggressive.

8. Do reflect on your achievements and contributions using concrete examples based on past history. But be sure to give team credit where it is due.

9. Do conduct yourself as if you are determined to get the job. At the close of the interview make sure to ask about the next step.

10. Do write a thank you note within 24 hours. This shows respect, attention to detail and your genuine interest in the position.

Don’ts:

1. Don’t rely on your resume or application to speak for you. No matter what your qualifications are, you must still sell yourself.

2. Don’t oversell / undersell yourself. There’s a time to sell yourself and your qualifications. Watch for the signs. But remember, this is not the time to be modest.

3. Don’t speak negatively about previous employers, colleagues or supervisors. You don’t know whom the interviewer associates with.

4. Don’t lie. When answering questions tell the truth. If it will reflect negatively on you, keep your answer short but honest.

5. Don’t hang your dirty laundry out to dry. Be careful not to offer negative information about yourself.

6. Don’t act as though you are desperate for a job.

7. Don’t inquire about money until you have a clear understanding of the responsibilities of the position and the salary range the job falls into.
